1. Pick a name

2. Check availability
Search the exact name to see if it's free. If it's taken, you'll either pick another or, rarely, buy it on the aftermarket from the current owner (usually far more expensive).
3. Compare the price
The identical domain can cost very different amounts at different registrars, and the renewal matters as much as the first year. Compare all registrars before you buy.
4. Buy it, skip the extras
At checkout, decline hosting, email, and "website security" bundles unless you truly want them. Make sure WHOIS privacy is included (it's free at good registrars) and turn on auto-renew so you don't lose the name.
